An educational estimate, not a census. Salary covers full-time employees (self-employed excluded); net worth is per household and definitions vary slightly across surveys (the UK includes private pensions; Romania is a rough estimate — it's not in the ECB's HFCS survey).
Salary and net worth are different questions
A salary is a flow — what passes through your hands each year. Net worth is a stock — what stays. The distributions are wildly different: in Italy a €150,000 salary puts you in the top 1% of employees, but €150,000 of net worth is roughly the median household. High earners with nothing saved and modest earners with paid-off homes swap places on the two rankings all the time.
How to read the number
Percentiles come from survey grids (medians and decile ratios), log-interpolated between anchor points. Real distributions are lumpy and survey years differ per country, so read "78%" as "roughly three quarters" — not as a precision instrument. Salary data covers full-time employees only; the self-employed are a different (wilder) distribution.
